The Sword or the Cross

October 27, 2015

Pastor Tanner

Last Sunday at Harbor Life, we talked about embracing the way of Jesus, which is the way of meekness.  Meekness is difficult, but it’s how Jesus approaches the world.  When his followers and friends wanted him to start a violent revolution, Jesus chose to allow others to do violence to him.  That choice saved the world from itself.  It seems like those who go for power and control always win, but in the end, it’s the meek who inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5). If you want to listen to the sermon, you can check it out under the sermons tab at the top of this page. It’s called “Meekness.”

We concluded the service with a couple of prayer practices that can help us to embrace the Jesus way of living life.  Here they are:

One Word Prayers

Choose one of the words below taken from Galatians 5, Colossians 3, and 1 Corinthians 13. Pray this word repeatedly throughout the week, asking God to grow that aspect of Jesus’ character in you:

  • Gentleness
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Faithfulness
  • Self-control
  • Patience
  • Compsassion
  • Humility
  • Forgiveness
  • Thankfulness
  • Unity
  • Wisdom
  • Truthfulness
  • Trustfulness
  • Hopeful
  • Persevering

Box Prayer (The 20 Second Rule)

When you encounter a situation that tempts you to react in a way you’ll regret, slow down and do the following while you focus on Jesus’ character:

  • Inhale for 5 seconds
  • Hold your breath for 5 seconds
  • Exhale for 5 seconds
  • Hold your breath for 5 seconds

And remember this:

“All of us are weak and frail; hold thou no man more frail than thyself.” – Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ
