The Great Commission
September 29, 2016
you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8
Before his ascension, Jesus gave this command to His disciples. We call it the Great Commission. It’s Jesus inviting us into the mission He came here for; to help people find their way back to God. As Jesus said often in his ministry, He came here to seek and to save and to gather all people back to Himself. At His ascension, Jesus’ work of bringing people back to God was not to end, it was to be passed on to His church.
In the week and a half I’ve been on staff here at Fair Haven, I’ve been overwhelmed by the ways I’ve been able to see people take this mission on as their own.
I’ve seen it in the way so many of you responded when we asked for Kid’s Hope volunteers, both as mentors and prayer partners. We believe the children in our communities matter to God and, when made aware of the constant need for more volunteers, so many of you were quick to offer your time and your talents.
I’ve seen it in the commissioning of the new year of Hand2Hand where numerous staff and volunteers filled our auditorium with the single goal of making sure children have access to the food and supplies they need to thrive.
This Sunday, we have another opportunity to partner with God in the mission of helping people find their way back to Him through our missions offering. It’s through offerings like these that we’re able to partner with individuals and organizations locally and globally as we seek to do everything we can to live out that mission that God has called us to.
It’s my prayer that each of you would prayerfully ask God how He might be calling you to join in that mission of helping people find their way back to Him.
